Tension-type headaches
Tension headache is one of the most common types of headache, characterized by a compressive pain on both sides of the head. These headaches are usually caused by stress, fatigue, lack of sleep or muscle tension and are usually not a symptom of a serious health problem.
Tension headaches are characterized by:
Frequently feels like "tape is wrapped around the head".
It is usually mild or moderate in intensity, but sometimes the pain can be more severe.
It usually affects both sides of the head.
It is not throbbing (which is often associated with migraine).
It is not aggravated by daily activities (which is also associated with migraine).
It is not accompanied by other symptoms such as nausea or vomiting. The causes of tension headache are not fully understood, but the following can be triggers:
Stress and anxiety
Insufficient sleep
Poor posture
Eye strain
Prolonged static postures or inactivity
Muscle tension (especially in the neck and shoulders)
Dehydration
Lack of certain foods or caffeine
Management of this type of headache usually involves the following steps:
Stress management: Relaxation techniques such as meditation, deep breathing techniques and yoga are recommended to reduce stress.
Adequate sleep: Ensuring regular and quality sleep is important.
Proper nutrition: Eating regularly and drinking enough fluids can also help prevent headaches.
Exercise: Regular physical activity can relax muscles and reduce stress.
Massage and warm applications: Massages or warm applications to the neck and shoulder area can reduce muscle tension and provide relief.
Painkillers: Painkillers such as aspirin, ibuprofen or paracetamol can relieve pain.
Antidepressants If tension headaches occur regularly or the pain is unmanageable, it is important to talk to a health professional. Headaches can sometimes be a symptom of more serious conditions and professional help is needed to diagnose and treat these conditions.
